The word is out around the Bay Area - Smash-Up Derby is the most popular, as well as the most unique, cover band in San Francisco (according to readers of the SF Bay Guardian and SF Weekly, to name a few sources). This is a cover band that re-writes the rules of 'covering' pop songs, by utilizing the framework of a given piece of music, then augmenting with lyrics from other (or sometimes several other) songs, thereby creating a hybridized, bastard child monolith that rises up to eclipse the original tunes in style, creativity and sheer sonic audacity. At their renowned live performances, the tight, talented backing band performs balls out versions of a given song, while the vocalists add vocals from another song or songs over the top, creating an entirely different and surprisingly fun, danceable new musical entity. Smash-Up Derby is also the house band for the world famous Bootie SF parties (now spreading all over), the world repository for artists in the mash up genre (see Kleptones, Go Home Productions, Lobsterdust) and a damn fun club night in and of itself. Smash-Up Derby is at the forefront of this exciting new style - they have laid the foundation, and are ready to build new sonic masterpieces the world over. Smash-Up Derby is fully equipped to bring their message to the masses in 2010. Catch them live at their Bootie home base at DNA in San Francisco, or at a cool venue near you soon.
